Climbing Mount Longonot: Crater Rim Hike Guide

A steep two-hour climb to the rim of a dormant volcano, then a full loop around a forested crater floor.

Mount Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano rising sharply from the floor of the Great Rift Valley, its near-perfect cone visible from the highway between Nairobi and Naivasha. The hike up is short by mountain standards — most people reach the crater rim in 1.5 to 2 hours — but it's steep and exposed, climbing loose volcanic scree with almost no shade.

The reward at the top is one of the best views in the Rift Valley: Lake Naivasha shimmering to the north, the valley floor stretching in both directions, and directly below you, a crater roughly 8km in circumference with its own forested micro-ecosystem — buffalo and giraffe are sometimes visible moving through the crater floor from above.

The full crater rim circuit

Ambitious hikers can continue around the entire rim, a roughly 7km loop with constant up-and-down along the crater edge, taking 3–4 hours beyond the initial ascent. It's more strenuous than the summit climb alone but doesn't require technical skill — just fitness, sturdy shoes, and an early start to beat the midday heat.

  • Start by 7–8am; there's no shade and afternoons get hot and hazy.
  • KWS rangers are usually required or strongly advised as guides — arrange this at the gate.
  • Bring at least 2 litres of water; there's none available on the mountain.
  • The park entrance is a short drive off the Nairobi–Naivasha highway, making this an easy day trip from either town.

Longonot rewards relatively little time investment with one of the most photogenic panoramas in the Rift Valley — a good half-day add-on to a longer Naivasha or Hell's Gate itinerary.
