Lake Nakuru National Park is small by Kenya safari standards — you can drive most of it in a day — but that compactness is exactly what makes game viewing here so productive. The park was fenced decades ago specifically to protect its black and white rhino populations from poaching, and it remains one of the most reliable places in East Africa to see both species on the same drive.
The lake itself is a soda lake whose alkaline waters once supported enormous flocks of lesser flamingo, turning its shoreline pink in a scene that became one of the most photographed sights in Kenya. Flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels and algae blooms year to year, so ask locally what the lake looks like before you go, but even in quieter years the birdlife here — pelicans, cormorants, fish eagles — is exceptional.
Beyond the flamingos
- Rothschild's giraffe were introduced here and now thrive alongside buffalo, waterbuck and both zebra species.
- Baboon Cliff and Out of Africa Lookout offer panoramic viewpoints over the entire lake basin.
- Leopard are present but shy; lion sightings are possible on the grassy plains to the south.
- The park is compact enough for a satisfying half-day or full-day self-drive if you have a suitable vehicle.
Nakuru town and the park gate are about 2.5–3 hours from Nairobi by road, making this one of the most accessible "big game" safaris near the capital — a strong choice if your time is limited but you don't want to compromise on rhino sightings.
