The Maasai Mara National Reserve, in Kenya's southwest bordering Tanzania's Serengeti, is the country's most famous safari destination, and for good reason — it hosts some of the highest concentrations of predators and grazing wildlife anywhere in Africa. The reserve's grassland plains support resident populations of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant and hyena year-round, making it a strong safari choice at almost any time.
The headline event, though, is the Great Migration: between roughly July and October, over a million wildebeest along with hundreds of thousands of zebra move north from the Serengeti into the Mara in search of fresh grazing, culminating in dramatic river crossings at the Mara and Talek rivers where crocodiles wait in the shallows. Timing your visit for these crossing months gives the best chance of witnessing the spectacle, though exact timing shifts year to year with rainfall patterns.

- The main reserve and surrounding private conservancies offer different experiences — conservancies allow night drives and off-road driving not permitted in the main reserve.
- Game drives run at dawn and dusk when animal activity is highest and light is best for photography.
- Outside migration months, resident wildlife and predator sightings remain excellent, so it's a worthwhile destination year-round.
- The Mara is reachable by a short scheduled flight from Nairobi, or a longer but scenic road transfer via the Rift Valley.
Few places on Earth pack this much wildlife density and drama into a single landscape — it's the reason the Mara remains the benchmark against which other African safaris are measured.
