Machakos, an hour southeast of Nairobi, is the historic heart of Ukambani and Kamba culture, and its food scene reflects that directly. This is roast meat country β nyama choma joints around town grill goat and beef over open coals in a style locals will tell you is simply done better here than in the city, with less fuss and better meat.
Beyond the grill, look for muthokoi, a slow-cooked dish of dehulled maize and beans that's a Kamba staple rarely found on Nairobi restaurant menus, along with kunde (cowpea leaves) and other traditional vegetable sides that pair with ugali. Machakos' open-air markets are worth a wander even if you're not buying β stalls piled with mangoes, oranges and local produce give a good sense of what's actually in season.
Where to eat
- Nyama choma spots clustered around the main market area are the obvious starting point.
- Ask locally for muthokoi β it's often a home-style dish rather than a menu item, so small local eateries are your best bet.
- Machakos People's Park has food kiosks worth combining with an easy hilltop walk.
It's an easy half-day trip from Nairobi focused entirely on eating well, and a good reminder that some of Kenya's best food is found off the safari circuit entirely.
