The Karen Blixen Museum occupies the farmhouse where the Danish author lived from 1917 to 1931, at the foot of the Ngong Hills in what is now Nairobi's Karen suburb — named, in fact, after her. It was here that she wrote much of the material later published as Out of Africa, the memoir that introduced much of the world to a romanticised vision of colonial Kenya and later became an Oscar-winning film.
The house itself has been carefully restored with period furniture, some of it original to Blixen's residence, and guided tours walk through both her domestic life and her more complicated legacy as a coffee farmer employing local Kikuyu labour during a fraught colonial period — context that a good guide will address directly rather than skate over.
